Student killed in library stabbing

A UNIVERSITY librarian in central China, who was said to have mental problems, allegedly stabbed two students in the library, killing one and injuring the other, on Wednesday morning.

Peng Chu is said to have stabbed Xia Jie, 22, to death in the library's reading room in the Qingshan campus of Wuhan University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Xia died of her injuries after being rushed to hospital.

The other victim, Hu Qi, is reported to be out of danger and in intensive care.

Peng is said to have started to sing loudly in a reading room at the library and reacted to students asking him to stop by pulling out a knife and stabbing Xia in the chest. He then attacked Hu with the knife, before stabbing himself, a witness said.

"I came to the reading room after hearing screams. I saw a middle-aged man with a pair of glasses holding a knife. The girl lying in a pool of blood was still breathing," a student, surnamed Liu, said.
