Student kills herself after using tuition to shop online
A UNIVERSITY student who spent two years of tuition money online for cosmetics and clothes jumped to her death from a dormitory building last month out of shame, Xinhuanet reported today.
Chang Ya'nan, 20, a junior from Yili City in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, spent about 30,000 yuan (US$4,890) online that was meant for her schooling at the China University of Geosciences in Baoding City, Hebei Province, police found.
"I cheated you all and couldn't face you," Chang said in a message she'd left on her itouch handset.
Chang first spent the 23,000 yuan that her parents had given her for tuition for shopping. Then she told her uncle that her bank card had been stolen and borrowed another 19,000 yuan, police said.
She killed herself on June 18, the day after her mother, Xu Qingfang, asked about her supposedly stolen card.
Xu said she didn't blame her daughter over the "theft," but after that, Chang behaved oddly, her roommates said. She refused to answer any phone calls and deleted most of her online friends.
"What I have done has no relevance to others" Chang said in messages she left. "No one should feel guilty. I just went to live another life without worries. I suffered from my own actions."
On Thursday, her body was cremated together with bottles of facial care products she had bought, according to Xinhuanet.
