Student on trial for stabbing teacher

A STUDENT went on trial yesterday in Yunnan Province for stabbing his teacher to death in an act of revenge.

The Intermediate People's Court in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture heard the case yesterday, the Yunnan-based Spring City Evening reported today.

The student, 21-year-old Pan Rongxing told the court: "I can only comfort the dead with my own life."

Pan killed his teacher Zhao Huawu on March 16 at the No. 1 Qiubei Senior High School.

Pan had sought revenge on Zhao two years earlier after an argument between the two families according to an earlier report which said Zhao and his relatives had assaulted Pan's father.

On the night of March 16 this year, Pan waited in the school with a knife. When teacher Zhao walked past, he stopped him and began quarrelling with him.

As they argued Pan drew his knife and stabbed the older man in the shoulder. Zhao tried to run away shouting for help but Pan caught him and stabbed him in the stomach and back another seven times.

Police caught Pan soon afterwards 10 kilometers away from the school and he immediately confessed.

Pan's attorney argued yesterday that it was a case of manslaughter. He said Pan just wanted to teach Zhao a lesson but Zhao resisted and fought back which angered the youth

Zhao's family had asked for more than 400,000 yuan in compensation, which was far beyond the financial capacity of Pan's family but the family promised to pay what it could.

Zhao had worked as a teacher for 27 years and won many awards during his career. All the students regarded him highly.
The court will deliver its verdict later.

Two days earlier in Beijing, a law student also went on trial for killing a professor. The student Fu Chengli stabbed Cheng Chunming with a knife in a classroom at the China University of Political Science and Law last October.

No verdict was announced on Monday. Fu probably faces a suspended death sentence, according to a source quoted by the Southern Weekend newspaper.
