Student recovers after half hour with no detectable heartbeat

A 20-YEAR-OLD university student in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei Province, recovered after he stopped breathing and had no detectable heartbeat for 30 minutes, Wuhan Evening News reported.

During most of that time, he received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from emergency workers.

The sophomore, surnamed Wu, collapsed as he was running the 1,600 meters on November 22. He was carried to the university clinic about five minutes later and was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

At 11:40am, he was sent to the hospital. He continued to receive emergency treatment en route. Doctors continued pressing on his chest and detected vital signs using an electrocardiography monitor at 12:10pm.

He has recovered, the newspaper reported.

Wu’s father said Wu was very healthy. He had helped the family in the rice harvest for eight hours a day in August when the temperature was 40 Celsius degrees. Also, Wu had great marks on a physical ability test.

A medical checkup showed Wu didn’t have any detectable diseases or conditions that triggered his collapse.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 90 percent of such collapses are caused by heart problems and the causes of 10 percent remain unknown. Half can survive if they receive emergency treatment within four minutes.

According to Hunan Daily, a high school girl in Chenzhou City in Hunan Province collapsed and died at a playground on Monday despite timely emergency treatment at the scene.
