Students die in ferry sinking

AT least eight people, including six students and two adults, died after a ferryboat sank in a river in central China's Hunan Province yesterday afternoon, local authorities said.

A total of 39 passengers - 33 primary and middle school students and six adults - were on board the vessel when it sank in Fuyi River, said Tang Dingming, head of Shaoyang County's publicity department.

Witnesses said the boat sank around 2pm after it left a pier in the town of Tangtianshi. Tang said 14 people were rescued and sent to hospitals in the county, and local authorities are still working to verify how many students are missing.

The students were returning home for Monday's Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday for family reunions.

The ferry's owner, who survived the incident, is in police custody.

Jiang Yaohua, secretary of Shaoyang County Committee of the Communist Party of China, said earlier that rescuers had retrieved eight students' bodies as of 6pm.
