Students feel the heat for their untidiness

College students who failed to clean their dorms in standard military style were forced to wear quilts on hot summer days as punishment, according to yesterday’s Xiaoxiang Morning Post.

About 30 boys at the Hunan College of Foreign Studies in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province, were ordered to run laps wrapped in quilts and with plastic buckets on their head, the newspaper said. About 20 girls had to tuck themselves into quilts and lie on the playground.

The punishments were carried out in front of thousands of fellow students.

Xie Yong, deputy director of the students’ affairs section, told the newspaper: “Boys just ran a lap and girls were punished just for five minutes.” He said the temperature outside was below 32 degrees Celsius on the days punishments were carried out.

Xie said the students hadn’t made their beds neatly, failed to put their shoes in the proper place and hadn’t cleaned their rooms properly. This hadn’t improved despite the efforts of their drillmasters, Xie said.

“They are punished in front of all of the trainees to have them disciplined and have others warned,” Xie said. But he conceded that the girls might have been embarrassed and said the school would offer psychological guidance.

In China, military training is mandatory for middle school and college students.
