Students hike 400km home
TWO university students have hiked more than 400 kilometers in one week to get home from school to improve their ability to endure hardship.
Jiang Wenlong, 19, a freshman from Central South University of Forestry and Technology, and Zhang Linghui, 20, a freshman from Xiangtan University, safely reached their homes in Lengshuitan District of Sichuan Province's Yongchuan City last night, today's Changsha Evening News reported.
The two set out for the hike on January 21 from Changsha, capital city of central China's Hunan Province, where their schools are, they told the newspaper.
They had planned to cycle home but finally dropped the idea because of inadequate equipment, Jiang told the newspaper.
They endured much hardship on the road just as they had expected: rain-soaked sleeping bags, aching feet and cold temperatures in the mountains, according to Jiang.
But they also encountered nice people and beautiful landscape, he added.
More than 90 percent of the 11,000 respondents supported their hiking plan in a poll on Sina.com.
Netizen "Yiranyouran" said the hardship along the road will help sharpen their mind, increase their survival skills and cultivate a spirit of independence.
But others regarded it a waste of time. "Xiacao" said it is unsafe to walk so long alone.
