Students join Lanzhou's New Year race in foul air

THE government of Lanzhou, the capital of northwestern Gansu Province, held a round-the-city race of primary and middle school students on the New Year's Day amid polluted air despite appeals from netizens and parents, a newspaper reported today.

More than 10,000 people took part in the 39th annual run held by the city. Local officials said the race was intended to "popularize fitness exercise among residents in wintertime," according to the Yangcheng Evening News.

However, the Lanzhou environment watchdog warned that the city's PM10 index, a count of inhalable airborne particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter, reached 216, indicating medium pollution. People, especially children, are advised to stay indoors.

A netizen named "Smiling Killer" made an appeal on his microblog, urging the organizer to cancel the race for the health of children and his appeal was supported by many netizens and parents. They suggested the race be held for adults only.

But the official organizer made no change of the plan and the race was held as planned.
