Students recruited by foreign spy agency
A FOREIGN spy agency has recruited almost 30 university students to provide military secrets since 2012, security authorities said yesterday.
Threats and incentives were used to persuade students to become spies, sources said.
The country involved was not named.
It mainly targeted students in aeronautics and maritime fields, approaching them via social media platform QQ or job websites.
The agency often initially claimed to be a consultancy, and asked students to search widely available publications on military and government affairs.
Few realized that they were “groomed,” instead seeing the work as simply a lucrative part-time job, reported the Chinese version of the Global Times.
In time, the spy agency started to ask for information of real worth. Either tempted by the cash or threatened that the authorities would be told of their activities, many students agreed to become spies, officials said.
The agency encouraged them to get positions in government departments and military authorities, a security official said.
Among them was Song Fei, a graduate from a top university in east China’s Zhejiang Province. Li was offered 3,000 yuan (US$481) a month last year and advised to apply for jobs in research.
China’s military has warned that it faces a “severe and complex” task in maintaining intelligence.
