Student's scissor attack kills old man
A MENTALLY disturbed student who had just finished exams went on a stabbing spree with a pair of scissors killing an elderly man and injuring two women.
The skinny 19-year-old student from Hanzhong County, Shaanxi Province had ran away from a hospital in the province's capital Xi'an on Friday, according to the Chinese Business View today.
Zhang Cong entered a Xingqing Road bookstore at 4:40pm and announced that he wanted to buy a book. As a shop assistant, surnamed Sun, looked for the book on the shelves Zhang suddenly wrenched open a desk drawer and took out a pair of scissors.
Zhang grabbed Sun around the throat and stabbed her in the stomach and neck as she cried out for help.
A 71-year-old cashier surnamed Chang ran over and tried to talk the crazed student into handing over the scissors but Zhang attacked the old man, stabbing him repeatedly in the belly then turning on another assistant, Zhou, who came to help.
Zhang ran out chased by the old man who suddenly fell to the pavement in a pool of blood and died on the spot.
A taxi driver, Zhang Yu, saw the shop assistant collapse to the ground, grabbed an iron bar and chased Zhang, eventually cornering him near a school where police arrived soon afterwards to seize him.
Zhang's father said Zhang was seeing doctors in Xi'an after showing signs of mental illness just before the examinations on June 7. Zhang had been constantly pacing around at home talking gibberish. On Thursday he rode his motorbike onto a rubbish fire on the street and became very agitated when onlookers tried to stop him.
Zhang's father has asked police to organize a psychiatric report on his son.
