Students sought to be rural teachers
A THOUSAND university students are to be trained to teach multiple subjects to meet a primary school teacher shortage in the rural areas of central China’s Henan Province, according to yesterday’s Zhengzhou Times.
High school graduates interested in teaching in rural areas are being encouraged to sign up for the trial project when they apply for places at the seven universities and colleges in the province involved.
They will have their fees paid and be eligible for extra subsidies, according to the report.
However, they will have to sign an agreement to teach at designated schools for at least six years after graduation.
Students who break the agreement will have to refund their fees and pay an extra 50 percent as a penalty.
“General teachers will have a more comprehensive understanding of students’ development and the holistic method will also stimulate the children’s interest in studying,” said Zhu Zifeng, a Henan education department official.
