Students to lose bonus points for college
SHANDONG, one of China’s most populous provinces, is ending its preferential college admission policy for ethnic minorities next year.
Senior high school students of ethnic minorities will no longer enjoy a five-point bonus in the college entrance exam, according to the eastern province’s education department.
All Chinese mainland applicants to colleges and universities must take the annual exam and the points they register, plus any bonus points they qualify for under certain policies, are the sole basis upon which Chinese colleges accept students.
The preferential policies that grant bonus points are managed by each province, municipality or autonomous region where the applicant is based.
The policies usually reward the children of, for example, people who have made considerable contributions to society, or applicants with some outstanding achievements, such as in sport.
In Shandong, China’s third-largest provincial economy with nearly 100 million people, ethnic minority applicants can get five-point bonus in addition to their exam scores.
More than 4,800 students enjoyed bonus points in the province last year, among whom were over 4,400 students from ethnic minorities.
Many provinces have been winding down their preferential policies in recent years, amid rising public concerns regarding fairness.
Cases of fabricating documents to allow students to qualify for the extra points have also been frequently reported in the media.
Most, however, have no plans to alter preferential policies for ethnic minorities.
