Study finds no link between Gorges dam and calamities

THE national meteorological authority said no obvious climate change has been detected in the Three Gorges area after the world's largest hydroelectric dam was built in Hubei Province.

The Three Gorges Reservoir has only limited influence on the temperature and rainfall in the surrounding area within 20 kilometers from the dam, according to a study by the China Meteorological Administration to evaluate the dam's impact on local climate.

The meteorologists denied the link between the dam and the severe droughts and floods in the Yangtze River region. Massive atmospheric circulation and abnormal intensity of surface thermal energy were the causes for a series of natural disasters in the region in the past few years, Chongqing Evening News quoted them as saying.

Computer simulation showed local temperature will continue to rise in the next 20 years; precipitation will decrease in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River; and more frequent and serious droughts might happen.

Criticism that the Three Gorges Dam is the cause of disasters has mounted after more than 5 million people were displaced or affected by floods in east and south China, while the worst drought in 50 years plagued Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces in June.
