Subway being built under Yellow River
CONSTRUCTION on the first subway line to run under the Yellow River started yesterday.
It will also be the first Metro line in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China’s Gansu Province. The Yellow River, China’s second longest, runs through the city from west to east. The 34-kilometer-long subway is scheduled to be completed by December 2017. Lanzhou has an average road traffic density of 628 vehicles per kilometer, which is twice as many as in Hong Kong. The subway, which has two tunnels, is expected to ease the road traffic. Builders have to drill through a 200meter-deep cobblestone layer.
