Subway builder buried by falling earth

A WORKER died yesterday after about one ton of earth caved in on him inside a subway tunnel under construction in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, the local Youth Times reported today.

The mishap has given rise to worries that more similar accidents may occur in the construction of the subway as one worker was killed and another injured last month when they were also buried by falling soil in a half-built underground station.

The victim, Sun Lijie, a native of Shandong Province in his 30s, was pulling off some steel rods embedded in the flank of the Metro Line 1 tunnel when a big chunk of earth overhead collapsed and buried him at 9:30am yesterday, the newspaper said.

He was rushed to the No. 117 Hospital but was claimed dead an hour later after treatment failed, said hospital authorities.

The tunneling company said Sun should have stood by a concrete pillar to perform his work as required and the tragedy was just an accident out of their expectation.
