Subway extensions open

THREE extensions of subway lines opened yesterday in Beijing as the capital looks to boost mass transit and ease traffic congestion.

A section of Line 8, an addition to Line 15 and a stretch along Line 9 opened.

Line 9 connects Beijing West Railway Station to the downtown area.

Beijing now has 15 subway lines stretching 372 kilometers, said Jia Peng, spokesman for Beijing Metro.

The network hauls an average of 6.2 million passengers per day. The three new extensions are expected to carry an additional 500,000 passengers a day, Jia said.

The city has turned to public transport, particularly rail transit lines, to tackle massive traffic jams. There are 5 million vehicles in the capital.

Beijing is building more subway lines. By 2015 there will be 19 lines with a combined length of 561 kilometers. By 2020, the total subway length is expected to increase to 1,000 kilometers.
