Successful boss actually a fugitive
A FUGITIVE arrested for participating in an armed burglary nine years ago had become a deputy head of China Unicom's branch in Golmud, a city in northwestern Qinghai Province, while on the run.
Zhu Dawei and his two accomplices, Xu Hui and Wang Ming, bought a homemade revolver and plotted the burglary in June 2003, when he worked for another telecom firm in Shenyang, capital of northeastern Liaoning Province, officials said.
They broke into the house of a company client surnamed Li. However, the gun discharged accidentally, and they fled.
Xu, Zhu's girlfriend at the time, was caught with the assistance of Li, who was slightly injured in a scuffle during the burglary. Xu was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Zhu was first apprehended in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, in 2004, but Xu blamed the crime on Wang, officials said. Zhu was released for lack of evidence.
He was freed on July 5, 2004 and started a new life in Qinghai, where he went by the name of Zhu Xingfeng and achieved great success, Shenyang Evening News reported yesterday.
Zhu was promoted to department manager. In 2011, he became deputy head, earning an annual salary of 100,000 yuan (US$15,750).
However, police continued to investigate the case. Wang was detained last year.
During the time in Qinghai, Zhu had married and had a son. But he divorced his wife early this year and left his property to her after learning that police were one step behind him.
Zhu has been escorted back to Shenyang. He insisted he only provided Li's address and wasn't part of the burglary.
