Suicide threat forced mom’s abortion

A WOMAN aborted her second child after her 13-year-old daughter threatened to kill herself, according to yesterday’s Wuhan Evening News.

It said the 44-year-old, surnamed Xiao, was in tears when she ended her pregnancy at 13 weeks and five days on January 15.

She and her husband surnamed Wang had been eagerly awaiting the new arrival to the family who live in Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei Province.

But their daughter thought differently.

Xiao said she and her husband had decided to have a second child after China relaxed its one-child policy in November 2013. But her pregnancy sparked strong objections from her daughter.

“She is the princess in our family. She is spoiled and self-willed,” Xiao said, “Since I was pregnant, she always said if I dared to deliver it, she would jump from the building.”

At first, the couple thought she was kidding, but gradually found she really meant it, the newspaper reported.

“Her temper started to grow worse. She threw items everywhere at home. She always said she would quit school and leave home. In the recent months, she was always shouting about committing suicide,” Xiao said.

“I found a knife when I cleaned her room about a week ago and I saw obvious scars on her arms.”

Fearful of losing her daughter, the newspaper said, Wang decided on an abortion.

Hu Hongtao, a psychologist, told the newspaper many single children lived in an environment where everyone yielded to them at home and parents had to be very patient to convince them they wouldn’t be neglected if another child came along.

But he said the daughter’s response in this case was abnormal. Her parents might have spoiled her too much.
