Suining mayor investigated for ‘violations’
THE mayor of Suining City in southwest China’s Sichuan Province is being investigated for suspected violations, the Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced yesterday.
According to media reports, He Huazhang, 50, was the right-hand man of Li Chuncheng, the former deputy Party chief in Sichuan investigated for “serious violation of laws and regulations” in December 2012.
The Hong Kong-based Sing Tao Daily said He was taken in for investigation last Monday.
Qianjiang Evening News reported that He was involved in “irregularities and violations” when his Chengdu B-ray Media Co Ltd was listed in 1999. It gave no further details.
Known as a pioneer in Sichuan media circles, He and his friends raised 300,000 yuan (US$48,420) to launch the Chengdu Business News in 1994.
It was earning 120 million yuan in advertising revenue three years later and reckoned to be one of the nation’s top 25 newspapers.
He also set up the B-ray Investment Company which, in 1999, bought a 27.65 percent stake in a Sichuan electrical appliance company. Following that deal, He had his media company listed.
He became involved in political circles in 2001 when his paper became part of the Chengdu Daily Press Group and he was appointed editor-in-chief of Chengdu Daily.
At that time, he had frequent meetings with Li, then mayor of Chengdu, according to media reports, and in December 2002 was appointed Chengdu’s publicity director.
Since then, he had made great efforts to “polish” Li’s image, including carrying a cover story about him, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.
In April 2012, He was made mayor of Suining.
According to the evening newspaper, He had been questioned several times when Li was being investigated at the end of 2012.
