Summer a season for flight delays
Airports on the Chinese mainland had an average punctuality rate of just 65 percent last year, with passengers encountering the most delays in July and August, according to an analysis released yesterday.
Punctuality was less than 60 percent in those two months because of large passenger numbers as well as frequent storms.
Passengers waited for more than an hour on average during the period, according to the report by the Civil Aviation Resource Net website.
Joyair, a regional carrier based in Xi’an in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, was the best performer among Chinese airlines with about 90 percent of their flights on time, followed by China Southern Airlines on around 80 percent. Xiamen Airlines has the lowest punctuality rate of about 62 percent, the report said.
In Shanghai, Pudong International Airport had the lowest on-time rate of less than 30 percent in July last year. Flights were delayed for about two hours on average, the report said. The city’s airports encountered severe delays last summer due to military maneuvers and bad weather.
Chinese passengers have long been complaining about delays to domestic flights. China’s Civil Aviation Administration said previously that airlines were responsible for 40 percent of flight delays.
