Supermarkets found to sell substandard food

WAL-MART, Trust-Mart and some other supermarkets in the southern Guangdong Province were found to sell substandard cooked food.

Guangdong's Administration for Industry and Commerce launched inspections of 51 batches of cooked food sold in the supermarkets in Zhongshan and Foshan cities.

About 37.3 percent of the food failed the inspection as they contained a banned additive, boric acid, or excessive amount of bacteria which may lead to food poisoning and diarrhea.

The agency published the list of the 11 supermarkets which sold the substandard food.

Inspectors found the roasted chicken legs sold at the Wal-Mart outlet in Foshan contained excessive amounts of coliform bacteria.

Dried beancurd sold at the same outlet and the Trust-Mart outlet in Foshan were found to contain unsafe number of bacterial colonies.

The agency advised consumers to avoid buying the cooked food or cook it at home again before eating them.
