Supervising The Stimulus

CHINA'S parliament will closely supervise the government's economic work this year to ensure the nation's stimulus plans are efficiently implemented, top legislator Wu Bangguo said yesterday in Beijing.

A key task for the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress is to improve supervision in a concerted effort to ensure proper implementation of major policy decisions and the successful accomplishment of this year's tasks for economic and social development, said Wu, the committee's chairman.

"We will devote a great deal of effort to promoting steady economic development and transforming the pattern of economic development," Wu said as he delivered a work report to the annual legislative session.

Premier Wen Jiabao last Thursday outlined a massive economic stimulus plan that features a 4-trillion-yuan (US$585 billion) investment to curb China's economic slowdown amid the global financial crisis.
