Supervisor at HK jewelry shop arrested for threats
A female supervisor at a jewelry store in Hong Kong that hit the headlines when a tourist from the Chinese mainland was beaten and later died over a shopping dispute was caught yesterday for another incident in which she was accused of threatening customers to make purchases.
A mainlander, who was part of a package tour to Hong Kong in early October, complained to Hong Kong Customs that shop assistants at the D2 Jewelry Store threatened her to buy a piece of jewelry priced at over HK$2,000 (US$258), said Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao.
Customs raided the shop in Hung Hom, Kowloon, yesterday morning and arrested the 59-year-old manager for threatening and using improper means to sell products, the newspaper said.
Under Hong Kong law, she may be fined up to HK$500,000 and receive a 10-year jail term.
It’s possible more people will be arrested in connection with the case, Customs said.
On October 19, Miao Chunqi, 54, was assaulted outside the store while trying to mediate in a dispute between his traveling companion and the tour group leader.
Hong Kong police said he was lying on the ground unconscious when they arrived. He died in hospital from his injuries the next day.
