Supreme Court adds teeth to fraud law
SENDING a fraud message to more than 5,000 phone users or making more than 500 fraud calls will be considered illegal and is subject to criminal punishment, according to the Supreme People's Court which made a new interpretation of the crime of fraud yesterday.
According to its new interpretation, the minimum of fraud money subject to punishment has been raised from 2,000 yuan to 3,000 yuan. Swindlers who cheat the disabled and the elderly or obtain emergency aid and donation dishonestly will be penalized severely.
To fight prevalent frauds through phone calls and text messages, the interpretation set indictable numbers for fraud calls and fraud MSM recipients.
Hu Yunteng, director of research of the Supreme People's Court, said the interpretation makes it easy for law enforcement as specific proofs can be collected and verified.
