Surgeons leave drill bit in woman’s foot, say it can’t be removed

A 48-YEAR-OLD woman is claiming compensation of 120,000 yuan (US$19,354) after carrying a stainless steel drill bit inside her foot for the past year after surgeons left the metal in her when repairing a fracture at a Beijing hospital.

And now, the hospital, which has not reached a financial settlement with her, says she should leave it there because removing it could be dangerous.

The woman, surnamed Hu, found the thin drill bit during an X-ray exam, Beijing Youth Daily reported today. The report said the metal was bothering her but did not say it was painful. She had the surgery in March of last year at You'anmen Hospital in the capital’s Fengtai District.

The hospital said it is too risky to remove the bit. A director surnamed Xu of the hospital’s medical department said the drill won’t harm the patient, given its current position as shown by the X-ray.

Hospital officials also argued that the surgery was a medical risk and that the consequences should be born by both patient and the hospital.

Doctors used the drill bit to make a hole while repairing the bone during surgery.
