Surgeons stitch back Net-addict teen’s hand

A BOY who cut off his hand in a bid to break his Internet addiction had it reattached at the weekend by surgeons at a hospital in Nantong, east China’s Jiangsu Province.

Wang Liang, a 12th-grader, was addicted to online games and frequently played truant from school so he could go to Internet cafes, the Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.

But as his addiction worsened so did his anxiety. And last Friday he took the drastic action of cutting off his own hand, the report said.

After leaving a note for his parents saying he was “going to the hospital,” Wang took a knife from home, walked to a nearby bus station and cut off the offending appendage.

He then tossed it onto a patch a grass and flagged down a taxi.

The cab driver, surnamed Zhu, was at first unaware of the boy’s predicament.

“He was covering his left hand and saying he didn’t want to die,” he said.

Zhu took Wang to the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, where he received emergency treatment.

He then contacted the boy’s parents and the police. An officer on duty near the bus station retrieved the hand and took it to the hospital.

The surgery, which took 10 hours, was conducted on Saturday, the report said.

Doctors said it was too early to tell if the boy will regain full use of his hand.

Wang was described by doctors and police as being “surprisingly calm” throughout the experience.

He was even quoted as saying that he “chopped down several times” before his hand came off.
