Survey indicates desire for simpler tax

JUST over half of respondents to a survey on tax are hoping government policies will make the system simpler, more transparent and more convenient.

Around 53 percent of the 2,005 people who took part in the China Youth Daily survey said a government scheme to reduce and exempt taxes and fees should be consistent with the country’s economic growth level.

Some 40 percent suggested eliminating unreasonable fees and creating a fairer tax environment, as well as speeding up individual income tax reform.

Last year, administrative approval for 311 items were canceled or eased, and tax reductions and exemptions worth 300 billion yuan (US$46.1 billion) were implemented to support start-up businesses and innovation.

According to a recent work report, the government is to moderately increase its deficit-to-GDP ratio this year, which is projected primarily to cover tax and fee reductions for enterprises.

Measures will be taken to alleviate the financial burden on enterprises and individuals by more than 500 billion yuan, the report forecast.

More than half the respondents said tax and fee reductions will contribute to economic restructuring, expand domestic demand, propel economic growth, and encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.

Meanwhile, just under a third said tax and fee reductions are conducive to transforming government functions and regulating income distribution.
