Survivor in failed suicide pact gets life sentence

A FEMALE college student in Beijing was sentenced to life in prison for killing her friend in a suicide pact gone wrong, Beijing News reported yesterday.

The convict named Hu Mingyue, 21, stabbed her best friend and classmate Zhang Yi in the neck with a Swiss Army Knife in a hotel room in the early hours of January 2, 2010, the court said.

Hu confessed that both of them had felt "tired of the world" and wanted to commit suicide together. According to their plan, Hu would kill Zhang first and then commit suicide.

They left their dormitory at around 4pm on January 1 of 2010 and after watching a performance booked into a hotel at around 12am on January 2.

Both had drunk some alcohol, and Hu said she killed Zhang first as planned. However, Hu didn't commit suicide and called the police instead.

Hu confessed that she never really intended to commit suicide, as her scheme was to surrender to the police and to be sentenced to death.

The court confirmed the fact that both Hu and Zhang had the intention of committing suicide according to evidence in their online chat record and gave Hu a lighter sentence, the report said.

Classmates of Hu and Zhang told the police that both of them were very good friends with similar characteristics.
