Suspect arrested in fatal bank blast

A man suspected of causing a fatal blast outside a bank in the central Chinese city of Wuhan was arrested during lunchtime yesterday, local police said.

Wang Haijian, a 24-year-old Hubei Province native, has confessed to using self-made explosives to cause the blast near a China Construction Bank branch in Wuhan on December 1, which killed two people, one of them a 13-year-old girl, and injured 15 others, police said.

Wang confessed to police that he planned the explosion in an attempt to hijack a money transport vehicle, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the police, Wang was caught at a hospital in the Wuchang area of Wuhan, 15 days after he managed to escape the blast scene, after authorities got a tip that he was seen there for a case of hemorrhoids. About 10 policemen were sent to the hospital to arrest him.

Wang used to be an air conditioner repairman living in Wuhan. He was wanted by the local police after his pictures had spread online, the result of tips from residents that he might be responsible for the bombing.

Wuhan police said on their official microblog that a 100,000-yuan reward had been given to residents who provided vital clues for them to catch Wang. Police said the residents' clues played an important role in the arrest.

Wang was filmed by surveillance cameras in Wuhan streets showing he was riding a white moped around the blast scene on December 1. He wore a white motorcycle helmet with a dark glass visor, and in another picture, he wore a green uniform coat with the same helmet. The pictures of his face were uploaded online after some local residents recognized him, police said.

The powerful blast swept across the gate of the China Construction Bank branch about 5:30pm on December 1, leaving a crater in the street. The bank said the money transport van was not damaged in the blast and drove away safely.
