Suspect detained for fatal milk poisoning
THURSDAY'S milk poisoning which left three babies dead and 36 other children hospitalized in northwest Gansu Province has been confirmed as an act of homicide with a suspect detained, Xinhua News Agency reported today.
Thirty-nine children, most of them under 14 years old, were hospitalized in Pingliang City after drinking milk on April 7. Three babies died later with the youngest being only 36 days old.
Lab tests found traces of nitrite, a food addictive used to make salted meat, in the milk from two dairy farms, which were shut down shortly after the incident. The manager of one dairy farm, surnamed Ma, was held by police, who are still probing the case.
