Suspect detained in largest smuggling case of endangered animal products through mail
BEIJING Customs officials discovered 70 kilograms of smuggled scales of the pangolin, a threatened type of anteater, in a parcel disguised as dried fruit and mailed from Pakistan锛宼he Customs Anti-smuggling Bureau said.
The discovery led to the largest smuggling case of its type, with endangered animal products sent through the mail, which is becoming a more popular smuggling method, according to an official surnamed Huang of the Anti-smuggling Bureau, Beijing Youth Daily reported today.
The pangolin has large keratin scales covering its skin. Populations have suffered because of the belief of some that its ground-up scales have medicinal qualities, and the animal’s meat also is eaten.
Officers followed the parcel in the mail, which was delivered to a suspect who had 1,030 kilogram smuggled pangolin scales in his home in Nanchang city in southern Jiangxi Province.
The 1,030 kilograms of pangolin scales came from at least 1,600 pangolins, according to animal protection officials. The suspect is in custody and is under investigation.
The China Customs Bureau is strengthening enforcement against smuggling through the mail, which is on the rise, officials said. Smugglers often mail a small number of goods at a time to avoid harsh punishment.
