Suspect dies after guard tells other inmates to attack her
A WOMAN suspect in Shaanxi Province was beaten to death by other inmates in a detention house, who were allegedly told to attack her by a police guard.
The guard is being held and an investigation into the incident is under way.
The commissar of Weinan Public Security Bureau, Zhang Laibao, told China Youth Daily that the 42-year-old suspect, Du Huiqian, was beaten by other suspects in Linwei District Detention House under the orders of a police guard on the night of May 10.
More than 540 suspects are detained in the detention house. Du and her husband were sent there on May 5 for allegedly selling drugs.
The director of Weinan Procuratorate Prison Supervision Department, Ma Dong, told the newspaper that the police guard on duty at the time of the incident was 28-year-old Wang Yinqiao.
Du was sent to the Weinan Hospital but died of her injuries.
The newspaper claimed Wang was formally on leave on that day, but had to go to work as there were problems with Du.
Wang had just quarreled with her family so she went to work in a bad mood, claimed China Youth Daily.
The newspaper speculated Wang may have become impatient with Du and instructed other detained suspects in the jail to beat her up.
Ma admitted that there were problems with the management and supervision at the detention house.
A report on Du's death will be published this month, said Ma. He said he could not reveal more details until then.
