Suspect for spreading weibo virus held by Beijing police

Beijing police have arrested a suspect who allegedly invented a fast-spreading computer virus which swept across Sina's microblogging site and affected about 30,000 users, The Beijing News reported today.

Sina.com reported the incident to police in Beijing's Haidian District last Wednesday, the day after the virus attacked its weibo microblogging site and police caught the suspect on Thursday, according to the report citing an insider with Sina who asked to remain anonymous.

The virus attack occurred about 7:30pm last Tuesday as tens of thousands of weibo users were stunned to see their friends posting eye-catching messages or pictures with links.

Such posts included download links for porn movies and naked pictures of famous TV stars. But with a single click on any of the links, the virus would attack, taking control of the microblog account and automatically posting several other similar virus-containing links to others.

The attack is the first serious virus attack in China's microblog history.
