Suspect held after 14 killed in blaze

A SUSPECT believed to have set a fire that killed 14 women aged between 18 and 20 in an underwear factory in the city of Shantou in southern Guangdong Province was caught last night, officials said.

At least one person was injured in the fire at the brassiere factory.

Investigators said the fire, which broke out at 3:30pm, was set deliberately according to an initial investigation.

A total of 84 firefighters and 13 fire engines attended the scene and it took two hours to extinguish the flames in the four-story building in the city's Chaonan District.

The suspect, surnamed Liu, was said to be a former employee at the factory and was caught in neighboring Puning City, investigators said.

The Southern Metropolis Daily said there was speculation that the suspect had set the fire as a retaliation for unpaid wages.

Last month, a fire at a clothing factory in Bangladesh killed 112 people and highlighted dangerous workplace conditions. Workers who survived the fire said exit doors were locked.
