Suspect held after 7 killed in hospital dormitory

SIX nurses were among 7 people killed when a knifeman went on the rampage at a hospital staff dormitory in Qinhuangdao City, in north China’s Hebei Province, early yesterday.

Another nurse was injured in the frenzied attack at the Beidaihe Sanatorium for the Beijing Military Area, the former No. 281 Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army.

A canteen worker at the hospital was arrested by police in his room in the block afterwards.

Suspect Li Xiaolong, 27, is said to have told police that he wanted to die, and had wanted other people to die too.

Police were called to the building just before 3.30am and discovered a harrowing scene.

According to police, Li first killed a janitor and got the keys for the entire building.

Then he went to the third floor, unlocked the doors to five rooms and stabbed the female nurses in their beds.

It was reported that all the women were stabbed in the head.

The injured nurse, who suffered wounds to her head and face and arm fractures, is in a stable condition, police added.

According to police, Li works at the hospital’s canteen and he claimed to have a history of mental illness, saying he was hospitalized in Tangshan in Hebei and Beijing in 2006.

China Central Television reported that Li lived on the first floor of the accommodation building with a roommate, who was not hurt in the attack.

Police said that Li did not try to flee after the killings, instead returning to his room.

According to police, Li said that he had depression and wanted to die.

The Beijing News reported that Li is from Tangshan City in Hebei. Villagers said he was very introverted, rarely mixing with others.

Village officials said Li had left the village for work a number of years ago, rarely returning.

Police are still investigating.
