Suspect in custody as body confirmed to be missing girl, 3
A SUSPECT in the disappearance of a three-year-old girl is in custody as DNA tests confirmed a highly decomposed body found at an abandoned lot in Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province is that of the girl, local officials said.
The suspect, in his 20s, was taken into custody yesterday afternoon and may face a murder charge, Wenzhou Metropolis Daily reported.
The girl’s disappearance had prompted a search and many online postings, officials said.
At around 7pm on August 11, Jiang Yumeng was playing in Zhuangyuan Cultural Park in Longwan District. Jiang’s grandmother could not find her after she returned after getting a drink for the girl.
A video clip from a surveillance monitor shows Jiang walked around after her grandmother stepped away. At 7:48pm, Jiang walked into some nearby bushes, came out, and walked around a pavilion. A man wearing white and riding a bicycle approached Jiang at 7:49pm, and both of them disappeared from the view.
Police didn’t confirm whether the man in white was the suspect they took into custody.
The body of a girl strikingly similar to Jiang and in seriously decomposed was discovered at an abandoned lot nearby on Saturday. Jiang’s face, which may have been treated with chemicals, was highly decayed and she could not be identified by her parents.
No further details have been disclosed by the police.
