Suspect in hit-and-run surrenders

A MAN wanted for the hit-and-run killing of four junior high school students in Shaanxi Province last Tuesday has surrendered himself to police, a Xi'an-based newspaper reported yesterday.

Wang Shuangwa was accompanied by relatives when he gave himself up, officials told a press conference in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, according to the Chinese Business View report.

Wang, 41, was allegedly driving a truck along a road when it crashed into a group of cyclists from Doumen High School in Xi'an's Chang'an District at 6:05am last Tuesday.

The truck continued on after the collision and some students were dragged 170 meters along the road. Wang said he had been sleepy at the time and fled because he was afraid, police said.

After delivering a consignment of concrete slabs to a local factory, he parked in a gas station in Xunyi County and placed the registration plates inside the cab. He fled to Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Police in Xi'an had offered a 100,000-yuan (US$14,600) reward for the arrest of the driver. Wang was named as the suspect last Friday and police were on the way to arrest him when he surrendered.
