Suspect in rape-robbery rampage escapes
A man who was arrested on charges of raping and robbing nearly 30 people in a 40-day rampage through 13 cities escaped on Wednesday while undergoing a physical checkup in a hospital in Qingdao of eastern China's Shandong Province.
Zhang Haijun, 34, a native of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China, started his crime spree in neighboring Liaoning Province on February 23 and committed crimes on the run, police said. The fugitive broke into people's homes, stole valuables and cash, and raped any single woman in the house. Some of his victims were seriously wounded, Shandong Business Daily reported yesterday.
Zhang, whose former name was Zhang Xuhui, was sentenced to 13 years behind bars for rape previously. He was freed in 2010 and began to rob and rape again in several cities, including Jinan, Shijiazhuang and Tangshan, the report said.
Qingdao police located Zhang in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang, on March 28 and apprehended him on Sunday. He was escorted to Qingdao on Monday. But on Wednesday afternoon, he fled from the Qingdao Haici Hospital.
Unnamed sources told the newspaper that Zhang seized his chance when his shackles were opened during a medical check-up. But police didn't confirm it and refused to disclose details.
Qingdao police have issued an urgent notice for help in capturing the criminal who is 1.78 meters tall, thin and bald. Zhang always wears a wig and speaks Mandarin with a northeastern China accent, the notice said.
The escaped inmate seems to know how to avoid police detection. He left few criminal clues by just committing two or three robberies in a city and was always changing his clothes, police said.
Police confiscated several fake identification cards, including a female identity, from Zhang when he was arrested. Zhang bought the female ID card in order to deposit his stolen money into banks, the report said.
