Suspect in teacher’s death turns himself in

A STUDENT suspected of killing a teacher who had confiscated his cellphone at a high school in Jiangxi Province turned himself in to police in Shanghai yesterday morning.

The student, surnamed Lei, called 110 at 7:23am, saying he had murdered his teacher and wanted to surrender, police said. They found him on Shangnan Road and took him into custody, transferring him to their counterparts in Jiangxi shortly after midday.

The teacher, surnamed Sun, 32, had taught chemistry at Linchuan No. 2 Middle School for five years. He had confiscated the student’s cellphone on Friday because Lei was using it in class, said school official Xiong Haishui. The phone was returned to Lei’s parents when they went to the school, Xiong said.

Lei complained about Sun the next day at 8am, but a vice principal calmed him down.

However, officials said that Sun was attacked at 11:26am while he was preparing lessons in his office.

They said another teacher heard Sun scream and called the emergency services. But Sun was dead before an ambulance arrived, the officials said.

Photographs of the scene at the school posted online showed chairs upturned, books scattered over the floor and several pools of blood close by. Some pictures showed the teacher’s body and his bloodstained shirt.

The incident came just four days after China’s Teachers’ Day.

Sun was the father of a baby girl born less than a year ago.

He was described as a teacher who was strict with his students and with himself.

A student, surnamed Chen, said Sun often hid behind a door, monitoring students in class. “Although we felt bound when he was teaching us, we are very sad about his death,” said Chen.

Lei’s classmates said Lei was a student who didn’t perform well in his studies and was often asleep in class.

Linchuan No. 2 Middle School has a reputation as one of the best schools in Jiangxi Province for its high ratio of students accepted by prestigious universities.

Pupils performed so well that 149 students were recommended to well-known universities across the country without having to take the college entrance examination and 90 students had been accepted by the elite Peking and Tsinghua universities.
