Taiyuan blasts suspect nabbed

Police in Shanxi Province yesterday detained a 41-year-old suspect for a series of explosions in the provincial capital of Taiyuan that killed one person and injured eight others earlier this week.

The suspect, Feng Zhijun, is a Taiyuan resident and an ex-convict. He admitted to his role in the blasts after he was caught at 2am. He said he set off the explosives to “take revenge against society,” according to a statement on website of the Ministry of Public Security.

The explosions occurred on Wednesday morning in front of the office complex of the Shanxi provincial committee of the Party in Taiyuan. One of the injured was said to be in serious conditions.

The ministry dispatched a vice minister who led a team of 26 bombs, forensic, physicochemical, video and DNA experts to work alongside the local police.

Police found homemade bombs in Feng’s house and seized a vehicle that they believed was used in the crime.

Feng had served nine years in jail for theft, police said. He became a taxi driver after he was released from jail in 1998.

The No. 1 Hospital of Shanxi Medical University is treating three patients with injuries on the head, stomach and leg.

According to China National Radio, a 30-year-old woman, surnamed Yan, was the first to be rushed to the hospital.

Her husband, surnamed Wu, said Yan drove to work at 7:30am on Wednesday.

When the first bomb went off, she had just reached the front of the Party office building. She lost consciousness after the second blast and had injuries to her head. Yan’s car was also badly damaged, her husband told the radio.
