Suspect vaccine still used after 3 people became ill

A DISEASE control center in northeastern Jilin Province is being investigated after it continued using a batch of rabies vaccines even after three people who received shots became seriously ill.

As this continued until there were fewer doses left than usually required for tests, there are suspicions Baishan Disease Control and Prevention Center in Baishan City deliberately delayed declaring cases.

But the center says it followed procedures, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Baiyun CDC ordered a citywide ban of the batch on November 22 last year, three days after a third complaint.

By that time, only 27 doses were left, while the National Institute for Food and Drug Control asks for at least 60 to test, Xinhua reported.

Families say they asked for an investigation earlier but Baiyun CDC required a written request, which they believe was a stalling tactic.

“I sent a text message to a section chief on October 30, when the city still had 157 vaccines from that batch,” said Gao Guanghui, the mother of 12-year-old Yu Yifeng, the first person to fall ill.

“I couldn’t understand why they didn’t stop using the vaccines,” she added.

Yu was bitten by a dog on August 23. Following rabies shots he fell into a coma and on September 13 was diagnosed with inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Similar conditions were diagnosed in nine-year-old Ma Jiajun and 56-year-old Li Yanqiu after receiving the vaccine. Ma is still in intensive care.

Baiyun CDC said it wouldn’t order a ban on the basis of one person’s text message.

While 60 doses are usually required, the remaining vaccines were sent to the national institute for analysis.

Vaccine manufacturer Jilin Maifeng Biopharmaceutical Co says it has paid the families 750,000 yuan (US$123,825), but denies liability.
