Suspected heroin gang busted, leader shot dead
SEVEN alleged gangsters of an armed drug-trafficking network carrying 33 kilograms of heroin were arrested and an eighth was shot dead by police in the southwestern provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan, a report said yesterday.
The ringleader surnamed Li was killed after he tried to open fire on police on February 26, and another gang member surnamed Luo was injured as he tried to escape and is receiving treatment in a hospital, the Sichuan news portal scnews.newssc.org reported. The other six members were taken into police custody.
Li's gun, suspected to be a military firearm, and two vehicles were confiscated in the police raid in Huaping County in Yunnan, on the border with Sichuan, the report said.
Three people were apprehended in Huaping when they were transporting the drugs to Panzhihua in Sichuan, while the other four were arrested in Yanbian, a county administered by Panzhihua, the report said.
Yanbian police were tipped off in early January that a drug-trafficking network purchased a large sum of heroin in Myanmar, hid it in neighboring Yunnan Province and prepared to deliver it to Panzhihua. They soon informed police in Panzhihua and several regions in Yunnan to join hands to stop the gang, the report said.
About 20 armed police officers gathered in Huaping on the night of February 25. About 6:30am the next day, they began their action. Some pretended to perform a routine road check and forced Li to get out of his off-road vehicle. Ignoring the police warning, Li sped up, crashed into the police cars and stopped in the middle of the road, the report said.
When getting out of the car he tried to shoot the police. However, he misfired and was shot to death at the scene.
