Suspended pupils return to classes
THIRTY-TWO students in southern China suspended from school for having long hair were allowed back to classes today.
The school in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, will decide on Monday how to deal with the grade-12 girls who broke a new school code banning hair longer than collar length, a teacher in charge of moral education told Guangzhou Daily today.
The girls told the newspaper they still face the dilemma of cutting their ponytails or leaving school, and one suggested that they would all refuse to get a haircut.
The teacher surnamed Zhang said the school has been trying to convince the girls to cut their hair since last March when the regulation took effect.
Many Internet users condemned the school for intruding into their pupils' personal lives. But news anchor Bai Yansong said students should accept the rule because they had not protested since it was enacted last March.
