Suspended sentences for teen torture

THREE girls in eastern China's Jiangsu Province who tortured a classmate and took pictures of her naked were given suspended jail sentences of up to 21 months at Hai'an County Higher People's Court, the People's Court Daily reported yesterday.
The teenagers slapped their classmate, surnamed Gao, in the face, kicked her in the stomach, pulled her hair and threw her against bedposts on the evening of November 7 last year after she had asked a girl surnamed Zhang to pay back a loan, the report said.
Zhang's classmates Wu and He joined in the torture at a school in Hai'an County, Nantong City.
They forced Gao to take off her clothes and took pictures, threatening to release them if Gao reported them.
They also took her jade necklace and 20 yuan (US$2.92) and forced her to sign an IOU for 600 yuan, the report said.
The three confessed to the charges and their families have paid more than 20,000 yuan in compensation.
The three girls' jail sentences were suspended for two years because they were under 18.
