Suspicious death in custody
A PRISONER in central China has died after eight hours' interrogation by police, with officials saying he drank a bottle of pesticide because of a guilty conscience.
Fu Gui, 40, from Xiangfan City, Hubei Province, was summoned to the police station on March 19 for an investigation into a looting in which Fu was a suspect, The Beijing News reported today.
Fu's family said they found fresh wounds on Fu's body and suspect that he was beaten during the interrogation. But police refused to comment on the wounds, saying the autopsy is still going on. However, they said Fu poisoned himself by drinking a bottle of pesticide in the toilet.
Fu called his wife Huang Guoqiao three hours after he was interrogated, saying he could not bear it any more, the report said.
County official Zhao Xinsheng said a search of Fu's house before he was questioned found stolen goods, so there was no need to use violence during the interrogation.
Zhao said he must have killed himself because of fear and a guilty conscience after his crime was exposed. He said the autopsy result would take about three weeks.
