Suzhou detains 12 for garbage dumping
SUZHOU police detained 12 people yesterday for causing environmental damage by dumping more than 12,000 tons of garbage on an abandoned embankment on Taihu Lake.
Police raided eight vessels, which were carrying construction wastes, in Jinting Town, Wuzhong District, last Friday.
Twelve suspects were detained and eight of them granted bail, police said.
Yangtze Evening News said the vessels’ owners and intermediaries were among those detained.
Initial investigation suggested the garbage was transported by Jinlu Construction and Engineering Co in Kunshan City, which is administered by Suzhou, from Jiading District in Shanghai.
The Jinting Township government said the embankment will be cleaned as soon as possible.
The Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said its investigators were in Suzhou.
