Suzhou workers protest over bonus, conditions

EMPLOYEES of a Taiwan enterprise have smashed vehicles and blocked a road in protest over poor company management in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province.

More than 2,000 workers were provoked by rumors the company planned to cancel a year-end bonus to gather at United Win (China) Technology Ltd Co on Friday morning in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP).

Some began to smash facilities and vehicles about 8:45am despite explanations by management and local government officials. The workers also blocked a road and threw stones at police. No casualties were reported.

The disputes aroused because employees had long been dissatisfied with the management, payment and food provided by the company, according to the SIP administrative committee.

The committee has asked the company to clarify the rumors and fix the problems as soon as possible.

Officials from SIP bureaus of economic development, social security and work safety were liaising with worker representatives.
