TB outbreak cover-up claims
OFFICIALS have been accused of trying to cover up an outbreak of tuberculosis in a university in Hangzhou, capital of the eastern province of Zhejiang.
Zhejiang University City College staff have confirmed that 15 students living in the same dormitory building had been diagnosed with the contagious disease.
The university has carried out health screenings after reporting the epidemic to the local disease control center, China News Service reported yesterday.
But Internet rumors allege that more than 20 cases have been found and the school covered it up, the report said.
There are around 500 students living in the affected dormitory building and most had known nothing of the outbreak, the report said. The few who were aware obtained their information online, it added.
A senior student, surnamed Wang, said the university asked most students living in the building to have health checks. Some students suspected of having contracted TB were placed in isolation, the report said.
The first case was discovered on October 21 and the Hangzhou Disease Control Center alerted, Dong Shihong, a university official, said.
When asked why students had apparently been kept in the dark, Dong said the university held meetings to pass on information to departments.
Zhejiang Education Department said the situation was under control.
