TV hostess denies donation scandal accusation
CHINESE businesswoman and talk-show hostess Yang Lan and her husband Wu Zheng yesterday refuted an online accusation saying that she donated 200,000 yuan (US$30,893) to a charity project and later took all the money back.
In a public announcement published on her microblog on weibo.com, Yang said that back in 1997, she took 300,000 yuan out of the remuneration from one of her published books and donated all the money to the Project Hope, a charity project organized by the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) aiming to support needy children's education.
She said in the announcement that 100,000 yuan from the 300,000-yuan donation was spent on tuition fees for 100 Shanghai students from extremely poor economic backgrounds while the remaining 200,000 yuan was used to promote the Project Hope overseas.
Yang said the promotion was required by the project to attract more attention and donation from overseas, and the money was spent on making a short news film that was later broadcast in the United States.
Yang claimed that all the expenses have been reported to the CYDF and she didn't take a penny from the donation.
Meanwhile, her husband, Wu, founder of Sun Media Group, said on his microblog yesterday that the total expenses on the overseas promotion of Project Hope actually cost far more than 200,000 yuan and they paid the rest of the expenses themselves.
According to news website People.com.cn, Xu Yongguang, former secretary-general of CYDF, confirmed with reporters that Yang's donation in 1997 didn't have any problems.
