TV officials guilty over tower collapse
TWO former radio and television administration officials in northern China's Hebei Province were sentenced to jail terms yesterday for negligence and taking bribes after an under-construction TV tower broke apart in a rainstorm.
The Jinzhou Radio and Television Administration's former director, Yang Xiubin, was given a one-year suspended sentence with a two-year probation period by Chang'an District People's Court in Hebei's capital city Shijazhuang and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,465).
Former vice director Shi Zhifeng got one-and-a-half years behind bars, the Legal Daily reported.
Both were convicted of negligence and taking bribes from unlicensed contractors to build the tower.
The two contractors, Li Jinrong and Xue Yuqiang, were sentenced to three-and-a-half years for causing serious project accidents, offering bribes and faking in public biddings. They were fined 75,000 yuan each.
Costing more than 3.2 million yuan, the landmark tower in Jinzhou City was under construction when it broke into three parts on July 23 last year.
The 187-meter tower suffered fractures to its steel structure at 56 meters and 70 meters.
Substandard design and materials and unqualified workers resulted in the tower's collapse and a subsequent economic loss of 2.75 million yuan, according to prosecutors.
Construction of the tower experienced numerous delays. It was to have been completed last February.
